issue #3 | date: 05/14/2025
Editors Note
This issue is for every delivery leader who has ever led a retrospective from their kitchen table, built roadmaps from the nursery, or turned on Zoom with a toddler on their hip.
As a new mom, remote work isn’t a luxury but a lifeline. I don’t abuse the flexibility. We have childcare. However, having the space to recover from postpartum and navigate uncomfortable moments in peace gave me the dignity and stability I needed to show up fully. Remote work allowed me to heal, bond, and lead.
However, remote roles have steadily declined. LinkedIn and Indeed report significant drops in remote job listings since 2022, but the demand for remote work hasn’t. 93% of tech professionals want remote or hybrid options (FlexJobs, 2024). We’re seeing increased competition globally for fewer remote roles. That doesn’t mean game over; it just means we move differently. In this issue, we’ll show you how.

📚 10 Ways to Build Lasting Relationships in a Remote Work Environment

In remote & distributed workplaces, promotions and leadership opportunities often hinge less on your résumé or performance and more on your relationships. Your visibility, trustworthiness, and influence within your network are what get you tapped for the next big project—or the next big role.
It’s easy to go unseen when your face lives in a Zoom box and your work disappears into ticketing systems. But great delivery leaders build real relationships—on purpose. Here's how:
Turn cameras on (when you can) – Eye contact builds trust. It’s a powerful cue that you’re present, engaged, and leading by example.
Send thoughtful follow-ups after meetings – Recap key takeaways, assign action items, or just say “great job.” Clarity is currency.
Use Slack for more than work – Culture lives in emojis, inside jokes, communities (#fencing, #watercolor, #newparents) and random wins. Don’t be afraid to show your human side.
Book virtual coffee chats monthly – Keep your network warm. You need to add value and do some good will, but we’ll save that for another day. The next person who refers you for a promotion might be the one you last grabbed 15 minutes with.
Host quarterly retrospectives that include team dynamics – Don’t just talk about the product, customer experience, or delivery velocity. Talk about how the team feels.
Start “working in public” – Post progress updates in public channels. Visibility drives opportunity.
Be a connector – Introduce team members who should know each other. People remember the person who helped them level up.
Ask deeper questions – Go beyond “how’s it going?” Try: “What’s something exciting you’re working on?” or “What’s been your biggest win this month?”
Create rituals – Morning check-ins, weekly wins, rotating meeting hosts—these add rhythm and shared ownership to the remote experience.
Show appreciation often – Silence is louder in remote work. Make praise visible. Tag people. Say thank you publicly and often.
💡 Insight: The best remote leaders aren’t just deliverers—they’re connectors. And connection is your competitive advantage.
